On Location

Gaffers and lighting teams in the UAE balance the country's hard year-round desert sun against the controlled stage environments of Dubai Studio City and twofour54 in Abu Dhabi, working with a deep, multilingual electrical crew base.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. We give gaffers and full lighting teams who know how the UAE's light shapes a shoot. Outdoors, the desert delivers intense, trusted sun, and our gaffers plan around it. These have large overheads, butterflies and negative fill to tame contrast in the Liwa Desert, bounce and HMI fill to balance shadows against bright skies, and careful colour control as the warm low sun moves fast at either end of the day.

Here is how this works in practice. On stage at Dubai Studio City and twofour54, the same crews build fully designed lighting setups for drama, commercials and high-end hospitality work. Our lighting teams run today's LED fixtures, tungsten and HMI inventory sourced through set up UAE rental houses, and they bring the gaffers, best boys and electricians needed to rig efficiently.

The UAE crew base is heavily global and multilingual, so skilled lighting staff are ready across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, supported by a growing pool of Emirati technicians.

Powering and scheduling lighting in the UAE means working with the climate and grid. Mains power is 230V/50Hz. Our gaffers spec distribution to match. Remote desert units run on power packs. We size fuel and load budgets for large HMI and LED rigs in locations with no mains supply. The prime production season runs October to April. These have summer heat of 45-50°C strains fixtures, ballasts and crew, so demanding exterior lighting work is scheduled into cooler months while year-round controlled shoots move onto Dubai Studio City stages.

Here is how the picture comes together. Filming permits are issued at the emirate level, through the Dubai Film and TV Commission and the Abu Dhabi Film Commission via twofour54, whose rebates of up to 35% on qualifying spend supports larger shoots. Big shoots such as 'Furious 7' in Abu Dhabi have shown the scale UAE lighting departments can handle. Our gaffers set up rigging, safety and power so setups stay efficient and compliant.

FAQ

Our Lighting Network

What does a gaffer do on set?

Here is the breakdown. The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, set up gear, and make sure safe power distribution across the production.

What crew positions are in a lighting department?

A full lighting department has: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and gear), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger shoots, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.

Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?

Crew and gear are mostly separate. We can set up gear packages from Emirati rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal gear for smaller shoots.

How many electricians do I need for my production?

Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium shoots mostly need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians, while larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.

Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?

Yes. Our gaffers are skilled working with global cinematographers and know global terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations. Many are fluent English Emirati-English.

Do you provide generators and power distribution?

We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our rental partners. Power packs operators can be had in crew packages for shoots needing major power infrastructure.

Productions in United Arab Emirates that need this often pair it with LED Lighting Systems, Portable Power Solutions, and Grip Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Gimbal Filming and Virtual Production.
